Frequently Asked
DVA Questions

What are Exercise Physiologists?

Exercise Physiologists (EP's) are university-trained allied health professionals specialising in exercise prescription and lifestyle modification to help manage and prevent a range of chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, chronic pain and injury rehabilitation.

EP’s use their extensive knowledge of human physiology and the science of exercise to create tailored programs that improve health, fitness, and overall well-being.

How is EP different to personal training?

EP’s are university trained Allied Health Professionals that specialise in physiology, anatomy and biomechanics. Our EP’s are experienced in exercise prescription to help medium to high-risk clients to manage chronic disease and injuries.

A personal trainer can also prescribe exercise for healthy populations looking to improve their overall health and fitness. Your EP will prescribe a specific exercise program suited to your goals and current ability.

What Will My EP Treatment Look Like?

Each session is different depending on individual circumstances and goals. We will complete an initial assessment to determine your current level of capacity and discuss your goals and current physical activity levels.

A structured exercise program will be prescribed, consisting of various exercises aimed at achieving your goals.

Do I Need to Pay for EP Sessions?

No, there is no out-of-pocket fee for Gold card holders or for White card holders with approved conditions. Sessions are fully funded by DVA upon receipt of a valid GP referral.

How Long Is Each Session?

Each session runs for 30 minutes and DVA Card holders are allowed up to 3 sessions per week.

Do I Require a GP Referral to Work with an Exercise Physiologist?

While a GP referral is necessary to access Medicare benefits under the EPC/CDM plans for chronic conditions, clients can still see an EP privately without a referral.

Do You Have a Cancellation Policy?

We request that you provide a minimum of 8 hours notice if you cannot attend your appointment for any reason. If you do not attend without notice you may be charged a cancellation fee.
