Commonly Asked Questions

What are Exercise Physiologists?

Exercise Physiologists (EP's) are university-trained allied health professionals specialising in exercise prescription and lifestyle modification to help manage and prevent a range of chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, chronic pain and injury rehabilitation.

EP’s use their extensive knowledge of human physiology and the science of exercise to create tailored programs that improve health, fitness, and overall well-being.

What Will My EP Session Look Like?

Each session is different depending on individual circumstances and goals. We will complete an initial assessment to determine your current level of capacity and discuss your goals and current physical activity levels.

A structured exercise program will be prescribed, consisting of various exercises aimed at achieving your goals. Each session will be different as we progress your program to keep it engaging and motivating. You may be prescribed additional exercises to do independently or given recommendations on how to improve other aspects of your overall health and fitness.

When Should I See An EP?

You should see an Exercise Physiologist when you need specific guidance to undertake an appropriate exercise program for you, or when you have a medical condition, injury, or disability that requires an individualised exercise program and professional support.

An EP will also teach you the correct way to exercise for your current ability, because not all forms of exercise are going to be suitable and some types of exercise may need to be adjusted and modified, so an EP can help when your health condition changes or you feel that you require more specific exercise advice.

How Is An EP Different From a Personal Trainer?

EP’s are university-trained allied health professionals that specialise in physiology, anatomy and biomechanics to help medium to high-risk clients to manage chronic disease and injuries. In contrast, personal trainers focus on general fitness goals like weight loss and muscle building.

While personal trainers help clients improve their overall fitness, EPs design tailored programs for those with specific health needs, often collaborating with healthcare providers for comprehensive care.

Am I Eligible for a Rebate Under CDM/EPC?

Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans, formerly known as Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans, are Medicare initiatives in Australia to support individuals with chronic medical conditions. Under CDM, eligible patients can receive Medicare rebates for up to five allied health services, such as exercise physiology, per calendar year.

Speak with your GP to determine your eligibility for these benefits and request a referral to Movement Innovation for Exercise Physiology to get started.

Do I Require a GP Referral to Work with an Exercise Physiologist?

While a GP referral is necessary to access Medicare benefits under the EPC/CDM plans for chronic conditions, clients can still see an EP privately without a referral.

Do You Have a Cancellation Policy?

We request that you provide a minimum of 8 hours notice if you cannot attend your appointment for any reason. If you do not attend without notice you may be charged a cancellation fee.
